We had so much fun with OCRA this week, we practised our football and basketball skills with Sue and Dom as well as some dancing outside in the playground with Jas.
In science we have been learning about animals. We have looked at how animals can be classified and lifecycles as well as doing observations and making predictions.
The children have been carefully observing the caterpillars to see what changes have happened and predicting what might have happened to the caterpillars over the weekend. Take a look at just some of the fabulous work the children have been producing in Science. We loved taking our learning outside this week to make the most of the beautiful sunshine. The children used water colours to create a landscape scene of Dartmoor. I was so impressed with the care taken to add detail - the children have really developed their skill with using a finer brush.
Year One had a wonderful afternoon on Wednesday participating in their sponsored Go Noodle! The children tried extremely hard to keep up their dancing for the whole hour. Well done, Year One! Those pesky pirates have been at it again and we still don't have our treasure back!! However, we discovered a message in a bottle... the pirates, Danger Dan and Peg-Leg Sue, wanted us to tell them why they should return OUR treasure.
As a class we brainstormed lots of ideas:
In our Computing lesson this week, we created pictograms to represent data on zoo animals. The children worked so well in their pairs, taking turns and problem solving together when things went wrong; it was lovely to see! All of the children successfully created their pictogram with the correct data and labels and were so proud when they had done so.
The wind and rain didn't stop Year One from enjoying some time outdoors in the field and outdoor learning area. We had some free play and team building games. Although, we didn't attempt a fire, so hot chocolate and biscuits were enjoyed in the warm inside the hall! What a great morning!
This week, the children created treasure maps. We thought carefully about what we could include on our maps and the children came up with some wonderful ideas... we had skull island, shark infested water, volcanoes, caves, mountains, trees and of course an X marks the spot with treasure to be found! We then discussed that our maps needed to have a key so we knew what the symbols meant. Once the children had finished creating their maps, we aged the paper by dipping it into tea and coffee.
I think the maps look amazing and I'm sure the children will be excited to see them on Monday when they have completely dried. This week, in Maths, we have introduced multiplication. The children have done lots of problem solving and team work, whilst using their knowledge of counting in 2's, 5's and 10's, to complete the Maths challenge activities in class. It has been wonderful to see the children helping one another and using mathematical talk to problem solve!
Well done, Year One! What a wonderful week we have had welcoming the children back to school. We have been so lucky to have such beautiful sunshine and the children have been enjoying spending lots of time playing and learning outside.
Over the Easter holiday, we had a little move around of the classroom and have introduced a 'curiosity corner' within the writing area. To link with our new Pirates topic, there is a treasure chest and shells in the tank which has sparked lots of thought provoking conversation and wonderful independent writing. We are all speculating what might be inside the treasure chest and who it belongs to! Look at some of the amazing independent writing children have done during independent learning time! |
