Starting with a quick flashback to last Friday, Year 5 had great fun when they were challenged to solve multi-step mathematical problems. The results were fantastic, with every pair succeeding in solving at least one complex question.
Early this week, Year 5 set about finishing off their Macbeth news articles. Once the draft was completed, they then produced a neat copy - I think you'll agree they look brilliant! Great work everyone! On Wednesday, the moment finally arrived for Year 5 to have their long awaited free afternoon. With games, colouring, snacks, smiles and laughter, the afternoon flew by. A truly wonderful afternoon. As part of our Space topic this week, Year 5 pupils were challenged to create their own spacecraft for landing on Mars (or, on this occasion, a lander to enable an egg to be dropped and land safely without damage). I think we must have a class full of budding engineers because all eggs were successfully landed without a crack - well done everyone!
Medieval Topic
We've enjoyed several lessons based on our topic of Medieval Monarchs this week. We started the week with an online workshop with the National Archives, where we studied images of King Henry VIII and found out how artefacts from the time could tell us a lot about him as a king. He liked to have images of lions, greyhounds and roses on his paintings and clothing. In our Medieval Monarchs lesson we were discussing the question: Who made a worse king: King Richard (The Lionheart) or King John? After an excellent debate, 11 voted for Richard and 14 voted for John, well done everyone. In our English lessons, we have started studying a children's version of Macbeth. Was he a hero or a villain? We've yet to decide but so far we're not liking him or his wife, Lady Macbeth, very much. For our Outdoor Learning morning on Friday, we sharpened some feather quills and made our own ink. We just about managed to light a fire and have a hot chocolate before the rain came down and we had move back into the classroom to design some Tudor-style signatures. Have a lovely weekend everyone. This week in Year 5 we have started our Science topic of Space. I have found out so many facts about our Solar System from the children and the books they have bought in - thank you so much! We created our own scaled-down version of the planets on a roll of toilet paper and then onto till rolls - the rocky planets are SO close together compared to the jovian planets.
We have also been discussing 'Who killed Thomas Beckett' in our History lesson - you'll have to ask your child who they think killed him: was it King Henry II, the knights or was it Thomas himself? In art, we are studying the designs of Morag Myerscough, in particular the bright colours and shapes she used to design the Sheffield Children's Hospital. Well done everyone, you've worked very hard this week. In Maths, we've been studying place value. I overheard some super conversations today when we had to solve the place value of 5 different scripts. Have a lovely weekend everyone. Mrs Leslie, Mrs Bonnett, Mrs West & Miss Williams We've really enjoyed getting to know the children in Year 5 this week. In particular, I've been impressed with their team skills such as listening to each other, taking each other's ideas on board and working together to achieve their goal. This was evident in our SCARF lessons as well as in the Saints session, where the leader commented on how impressed he was with them. Well done Year 5!
Our Saints session will always be the last slot on a Thursday afternoon so it seems a lot easier for the children to go home in their PE kits and then bring them back into school the next day. If this isn't convenient for you, please let me know. We don't generally have PE on a Friday but it's helpful to have PE kits back in school in case they need to get changed for anything. Have a lovely weekend. Mrs Leslie, Mrs Bonnett, Mrs West and Miss Williams. It was so lovely to welcome pupils into Year 5 on Wednesday. They had a wonderful day and we're really excited about the year ahead.
Mrs Leslie, Mrs Bonnett, Mrs West & Miss Williams. What an impressive afternoon it was in Year 5 today! For the past few weeks, pupils have been finding out about the services and business in their local community as well as the importance of international trade. We've studied foreign exchange and 'shopped' our way around the world - researching the different goods that countries import and export.
To conclude this unit of work, they have created their own 'businesses'. I have been amazed by the commitment and drive of the pupils and how they approached their projects with such professionalism. Well done Year 5 - you are ALL fantastic budding entrepreneurs. It was a beautifully sunny afternoon for the Sports Day to finally take place on the school field. Well done to everyone for taking part, having fun and showing super sportsmanship qualities in cheering each other on.
