This week we have been practising our subitising to 5, so we can see an amount without counting, such as 5 spots on a dice or 3 fingers.
The children have also enjoyed lots of building work outdoors. They have set up road works, made signs, used tools and moved water by constructing their own elaborate gully systems. We have celebrated two weddings in class today. Sorrel and Arthur married in our Muslim ceremony then Isabella and William married in our Christian ceremony. The children were able to experience both and compare each. The afternoon was rounded off with cake, 'champagne' and dancing. Special thanks to Rev Paul and Kaye for opening St Mary's church and officiating at the Christian ceremony.
Our mathematics learning this week has been based around circles and triangles. We have been exploring their properties, rotating them and went on a shape hunt with the Year 4 children.
In our gymnastics lesson this half term we are practising to hold a balance and different types of roll.
This week, Year R children have been learning about the festival of Diwali. They have acted out the story of Rama and Sita, created Rangoli art work and made their own diva lamps from clay.
Year R Children and staff have been very excited to see the launch of our new Story Sack lending library. Each week, every child takes home a Story Sack and returns it every Friday to swap for another. The sacks are based on various popular children's stories as well as a wide range of themes with information texts such as space, dinosaurs and bugs. They contain 2 books, puppets, games and activities that parents and children can share at home. We hope that families will enjoy spending time sharing these stories, playing the games and developing lovely language and conversations based on different topics.
We are most grateful to Zenna Jessop for sewing each sack with beautiful fabrics to match the theme of the book; they look wonderful outside and in. Autumn is in full swing here in Year R. At the forest area this week, children made autumn wreaths and salt dough hedgehogs which we cooked on the camp fire. They also completed an autumn themed phonics treasure hunt.
Our inspiration for autumn art has been the book 'Leaf Man, by Lois Ehlert. We made the most if the lovely autumn weather and went blackberry picking at Mrs Glover's farm. Back in class, children cut up some apples and made their own toppings for delicious apple and blackberry crumbles to take home.
