The Music ConcertI'm still glowing from the absolute joy of our music festival. What a glorious afternoon of song, solos and sunshine! Thank you to everyone who took part, helped in any way, or came and watched, danced and sang. Our school field became a remarkable cross between Glastonbury and Glyndebourne for an afternoon and I couldn't be happier or prouder. What an incredible depth of talent we have in our pupils and what a performance they put on. Thank you to Lucy Wilson for the photos, and once more to Mrs Dunn who conceived of the idea and brought it to its remarkable conclusion. If your children are inspired and would like to learn an instrument, please contact the school office. We have peripatetic teachers for piano, drums, guitar and woodwind. Pre-school Window Display in the Village ShopA big thank you and well done to the preschool pupils who have made a beautiful display for the shop window to advertise the South Zeal open gardens. Class PhotosThe link to purchase school class photographs has now been sent out to parents and carers via Schoolcomms. Please contact the school office if you have not received the link. Trust Wildlife ChampionsOn Wednesday, we went to Meeth Quarry for a wildlife champions day with all of the other schools. There were four activities that we did throughout the day. Our first activity was The Deep and it showed us how deep animals lived and which zones they lived in underwater. Our second activity was bushcraft where we used flint and steels to light little fires in tins and shells. The third activity was water world and we had nets and trays and we had to find little bugs in the swamp. I found a dragonfly! Our last activity of the day was a nature walk. We had nets and Petri dishes and we used our clip boards and paper to tick off the bugs we had found. We went on a walk and looked down to where they were digging in the quarry. It was a really fun day and we’re looking forward to using some of the ideas back at school. Jack Dennis, Y4. The Get Ahead Team What a lovely, lovely day we've had today! Our Jubilee picnic was such a happy and an amazing experience. Firstly, everyone looked so amazing in their red, white and blue clothes. Secondly, the weather couldn't have been better. Thirdly, some wonderful fairies (thanks PTA and Dawn!) ensured that we arrived at school this morning to find every inch of fencing and boundary bedecked in red, white and blue bunting! Lastly, we gathered together on the playground to enjoy the most terrific picnic party. The children chose where to sit and mixed with pupils from other classes to really enjoy being part of South Tawton's wonderful friendly, family atmosphere! Thank you to all the staff and children who helped to set up and clear away the playground. Thanks to all the parents and children who baked and provided such a delicious feast. In addition to looking forward to the show, the children were so excited to ride on the coach; for some children it was their first ever coach journey. The musical was brilliant and it has been lovely to hear the children singing some of the songs in school this week. Even an unexpected breakdown didn’t dampen the children's spirits and the fun continued outside of the theatre in the sunshine! The children's behaviour throughout was exemplary - so much so that teachers from other schools complimented them on this. Well done, KS1! Y4/5 Residential VisitThe children from years 4 and 5 had an incredible three days and two nights at PGL Barton Hall. Staff report that the children were amazing. They tried new activities, pushed themselves out of their comfort zones and learnt new skills. They also worked together well as teams to face and overcome challenges. We hope that all the children enjoyed their residential as much as the staff did. Congratulations Year 6A huge well done to Y6 who completed their SATs week cheerfully and calmly. After a week of hard work, they celebrated on Friday with a day at Okehampton YHA where they took part in a variety of adventurous activities. They have absolutely nothing to worry about as they're fully prepared and should now just enjoy showing off all that they have learnt. We need your help this summer!![]() Whether you currently use childcare or not, your voice counts. The answers you give in this short survey will help the early years and childcare team at Devon County Council to plan and make sure that there is enough childcare available in Devon. Even if you have participated in previous surveys, it is important to get your views now, so we can look at changes to childcare demands over time. Take part at devon.cc/parents-childcare-survey It's been a lovely, sunny week for the start of the summer term and new topics are well under way. The children have been enjoying the sunshine and playing together on the field. Two of the Trust primary schools have recently had Ofsted inspections and we expect South Tawton to be inspected this term. Years 4 and 5 are getting excited about their upcoming residential visit to Barton Hall in Torquay on 9th, 10th and 11th of May. Year 2 and 6 are ready to shine in their upcoming SATs tests and Years R, 1 and 2 are looking forward to their rescheduled trip to Northcott theatre which was postponed before Christmas. Thank You!![]() I'd like to say two very big thank yous which make me feel incredibly privileged to be part of the South Tawton Community. Firstly, thank you to everyone who have donated items and made so many offers to help our Ukrainian family. They also ask me to pass on their thanks for ensuring that they are so well equipped as they begin their new lives. I'm delighted to say that they seem to be settling in very well and are enjoying the peace and safety of life in Devon. Secondly, it was wonderful to see so many of you yesterday for our Groundforce Day. Thank you to everyone who gave their time in painting, power-washing, sweeping, shed tidying, weeding, gardening and rubbish removal. The school is looking amazing! There are some photos in the PTA news section below. I include a photo of Hugo in the bluebells near Meldon and recommend a visit there. Statutory Testing This term sees the return of the Y1 phonics screening, Y2 and Year 6 standard assessment tests (SATS) and also a new times table test for Y4. These tests will take place in school with as much preparation, but as little stress as possible! We do ask that you support us, as always, with homework. Learning times tables in particular is something you can easily support with at home with games and apps, including Times Tables Rockstars. As always, daily reading and positive attitudes towards problem solving and study will always help you child throughout their primary education and help set them up to have good learning attitudes, independence and self-discipline. Reading every day is the most important support you can give at home. Sharing books, talking about book characters and plots as well as listening to your child read is so valuable and makes a huge difference across the curriculum. Labelling clothes This is the time of year that children go out to play with coats and jumpers and then take them off and leave them all over the playground and field! Please can you make sure coats and jumpers are labelled! Wellies, plimsoles and PE kits should be labelled too and make it quick and easy to reunite them with their owners. PE Kits Please make sure this your children have a full PE kit in school every day. This should be a white T-shirt, black/navy shorts and plimsolls or trainers. Bank Holidays Coming Up Please note that Monday 2nd May and Monday 6th June are Bank Holidays and children will not be in school. The latter is in lieu of the Queens Jubilee Bank Holiday which falls on the Thursday before during our half term week.
